2022 Pool Trends (San Diego Edition)
A quarter of the way into 2022 and we are ready to discuss pool trends for San Diego County. Let’s take a look...
Niche Pools
In 2022, we have seen a mix of old and new pool trends in terms of design. On one hand, modern pool designs – like rectangular pools or geometric pools are still very popular. However, unique pool designs are making a big comeback.
These include niche pools like infinity-edged pools, spool pools, lap pools, and pools with unique features such as swim-up bars or grottos.
Pools for the Entire Family (Pets Too!)
Another interesting trend we are seeing is more pool designs for kids. Both existing and new pool owners are adding waterslides, jumping rocks, splash fountains, and shade sails to their finished pool selections. Thus, making their pools kid-friendly for their kids and future grandchildren to come.
Owners who want to enhance their pool's safety are adding features like fences, retractable pool covers, Baja shelves, and automated security systems controlled from their phones.
Another trend in this category is grandparents, especially as they age and struggle with depth perception, balance, and stability. Trim tile is very important because it gives people a clear marker for where the step or bench is. Pool owners are adding handles or rails for getting into and out of a pool. Also, the size of that first step is getting bigger to help with this.
Tanning Ledge + Ledge Loungers - We also see dog owners asking for a larger first step or even making the Baja shelf the first step. Ledge Lounger makes two different full-sized loungers. One is relatively flat/close to the ground for Baja Shelves close to the top of the water. They also make one with a raised base that works well with deeper Baja Shelves. But the Baja shelf is key for the elderly, kids, and pet owners.
Pool Finishes
Built-in Bench Seating – whether you’re taking geometric or free form, bench seating in various areas of the pool is a great way to encourage connection while in the pool. Visiting, talking, or just enjoying a friendly kiss can be enhanced by bench seating, especially when located near the spa or near the Baja Shelf, or even near a fire pit or TV. The goal is to connect and strengthen families and friends. We’re seeing more bench seating.
Barstools - Barstools allow the versatility of 360-degree viewing (while seated, you can rotate to be facing any direction)
Stacked Spa Spillways - Stacked spillways simulate a staircase of stone that allows the water to fall into the swimming pool. Made from travertine or flagstone, the position of the rocks creates a babbling brook sound or falling water.
Umbrella Sleeves – not just in the Baja. We can add them to the bench seats or to the deck. I’m not sure I’d put them in the coping just because I’d hate to weaken the coping by drilling. But we see them in the bench seating and in the deck in different strategic areas for maximum use and maximum shade.
Grotto Fun - Make your grotto your own. Because many grottos are using artificial/faux rock, they can get creative with the mud and put in some friendly skulls and then add gems to make them look like they are pirate treasure. I saw the finished pics and they had red and green and diamond-looking gems strategically placed in each skull. People can put native American symbols on the grotto to give it some sort of backstory. I joked with one customer to put some alien-looking text on the exterior of their grotto that translates into, “No Crying in our pool. Kids who cry in our pool are cursed to wet the bed until they're 20” or something ridiculous like that. Of course, since it’s written in a made-up language, the family can make up whatever they want for their grotto. If you’re into Star Wars use the Rebel Alliance symbol for one side and the Evil Empire on the other. Get creative.
Technology Upgrades (Hard wired vs Wireless)
Another unique feature we expect to see more of this year is advanced automated pool lighting and sound systems.
Speakers – not just blue tooth. Sometimes blue tooth just doesn’t pack the same punch as having a system with wires. We have pool owners who have put large bass/subwoofers in the middle of their raised planter next to the pool for maximum sound enjoyment. When the ground is all open, that is the time to run the speaker wire out to where you want speakers.
Lighting - Low voltage, deck, and plant lighting. Color LED. Again, use deck lights to mark the first step into the pool, the first step into the jacuzzi, a transition or walkway area, or just to highlight different angles or corners of the pool and spa. Proper plant lighting makes such a huge difference in the finished or polished product. And again, when the ground is open, that’s the best time to add wires underground.
Outdoor Living Spaces
In 2022 we expect to see outdoor living spaces take center stage. If you already have a pool, this is an opportunity to enhance your yard or outdoor spaces. With more people working remotely, nice weather means even more time in outdoor living spaces than ever before.
Common outdoor living upticks include sunken firepits, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and bocce ball courts.
Pool Materials
For those building or renovating their pools in 2022, materials will be a hot topic. Many people are opting for “greener” pool materials, such as natural stone, composites, and acrylics. While these materials can be a bit more expensive, they come with a wealth of benefits like durability and low maintenance. In addition, many pool builders are now using reclaimed or recycled materials in their pool build. So if you’re looking to go eco-friendly – or just want an interesting pool design – keep your eyes peeled for pool material trends!
Summary:
The pool industry is constantly evolving, which means pool designs in 2022 will be no different. In fact, we believe pool trends for the next few years include more expansive outdoor spaces, pools designed for children, niche pools, eco-friendly building materials, and hard-wired technology. Keep an eye out for these trends and more as we move into 2023!
How Much Will My Pool Cost?
The Devil is in the Details
How much does a pool cost? We get asked this a lot. Unfortunately, it’s not a straightforward answer. There are a lot of details to consider that drive the total cost of your pool. This blog addresses the many variables that impact the cost of your pool in your backyard.
CONDITIONS OF YOUR BACKYARD
Demolition – It takes labor, employees, and machines to break down a wall or remove a cement slab. Then we have to dispose of the materials we demolished. If we’re breaking red brick, it gets disposed of by itself because it cannot be re-used. It has no value. If you have grass or weeds, they get disposed of at a different location. You cannot mix grass and/or weeds with fill dirt. Once the grass decomposes, you’re left with a number of voids in the dirt which could lead to a much bigger problem down the road if you’ve put a foundation on top and the voids cause it to crack.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the conditions of your backyard.
Access Width – If you have 80” or more with a gate that opens and closes and allows us to get into and out of your backyard, we can use our largest machines which means quicker excavation time, fewer trips from the backyard to the front yard where the dump truck is waiting for all the dirt. If you have 44” of access, we need our smallest machines which means more days on the job, additional employees, more trips back and forth, more gas, more wear and tear on the machine, and makes for a more expensive project.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the conditions of your backyard.
Septic or Sewage – Do you know where the septic lines are? Do you have a leech line plan/map?
Easements – water lines, roads, different districts have different requirements, electrical, gas, etc… sometimes require special permissions from municipalities. Sometimes you can get them changed.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the requirements of the city you live in.
Setbacks – Some municipalities are 5’ from house, fence, property lines. Others are 3. Some allow for 2’ but require additional engineering. That additional engineering is known as a “Sur-Charge.”
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the requirements of the city you live in.
Rocks or Hard Dirt – We can’t see underground and won’t know until we start digging.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the conditions of your backyard.
Irrigation Lines – we can’t see them and we’re here to dig you a pool.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the conditions of your backyard.
Drain Lines – if they are in the way of the pool, they’re coming out and new ones should be used to ensure proper drainage.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the conditions of your backyard.
Fence Height – in most municipalities, the fence must be at least 60” high measured from the outer side of the fence.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the requirements of the city you live in.
Gate – Must be at least 60” and must open towards the street and away from the pool area. Also, must auto close every time.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the requirements of the city you live in.
Barriers – Must be at least 2. Can be a fence and an alarm or a fence and an automatic pool cover. Every access door that leads to the pool area must have an alarm on it.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the requirements of the city you live in.
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
Electrical Panel – need at least 50 open amps on your panel. Electrical lines and conduit. Needs at least two spots/slots open. Each breaker is typically 25 amps 120 volts per. Need 220 volts.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the electrical available.
Saw Cut – Gas & Electrical lines typically go underground. How are we going to get the Electrical and/or Gas from the meter to the pool equipment?
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on the electrical available.
Fillback the Saw Cut – now that we have the gas line and electrical lines underground, we need to cover the dirt with something like cement or bricks or a paver.
POOL SELECTIONS & FINISHES
Size and Depth of Pool Steps – Length & width & depth. Focus on the first step. Is it big enough? Small enough. Is the Baja Shelf your first step? Will you have elderly parents or grandparents trying to step into and/or out of your pool?
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Depth of Steps – Focus on the Baja Shelf and how deep it is and how long it is.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Lights - color vs. white
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Automation vs Timer – With automation, everything is controlled via an app. With a timer and a switch, you have to set the time and then flip the switch to turn on lights, change colors of the lights, turn on the jacuzzi, turn on the heater and then turn everything off when you finish.
Saltwater vs Chlorine – Salt converts into chlorine when combined with water. But saltwater systems are easier on your eyes, skin, hair, and clothes. Saltwater is not as salty as the ocean. The salt passes through a cylinder that helps with the conversion. Freshly converted saltwater is purer.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Interior Finish – white plaster, grey plaster, mini pebble, hydrazo. Difference between brands like PebbleTech, Stone Scapes &/or Wedge.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Spillover Width – 1’6” vs 2’ or 3’ A 1'6" spill-over width forces the water out, away from the dam wall. 2' or 3' spill-over width will produce more of a dribble vs a waterfall.
>>Short Answer: the cost can vary based on your personal preferences.
Next, we get "Why is the pool so expensive?" Or, "why is the pool so CRAZY expensive? Or why is the pool so $#%^&n expensive? Are you kidding me? I paid less for my first house!
We understand, but a pool is an intricate project consisting of all the variables mentioned above and sometimes more. So when we are asked how much is a pool, we need more information, have to measure your yard, and inspect your yard conditions before we can answer that question.
Another thing to note is that timing is essential in determining price as material prices change often and sometimes materials become unavailable...again affecting the price.
I just finished talking with one of my subcontractors. He specializes in shotcrete, which is basically the most essential part of your pool.
The shotcrete hardens to 3,800 psi which means when the shotcrete is finished curing, it should be super, super solid.
Guess what??? Cost of the hoses he uses just went up 100%. That’s right. Double what he paid for the last year.
He uses a decent amount of wire as guides and that wire is super thin and made of steel. Guess what??? It went up significantly from 2021 to 2022.
Cost of Labor??? That’s right. It went up too or labor is limited. And this is just one part of your pool.
Materials are in short supply but in high demand. Guess what?? That’s right, they went up too. And the shortages have made it difficult to get some of the items you want.
I’ve had customers tell me that their brother is getting a similar pool with the same dimensions for thousands less than what I’m charging. My first question is always, where does your brother live? Maybe the cost of labor is lower where he lives. Or maybe he’s choosing different materials.
Our cost is what we charge to be a profitable business and build a quality long-lasting pool. Our work stands for itself. We have overhead, offices, computers, trucks, cars, and heavy machinery to account for. Our price reflects our experience, our management, and our quality.
There will always be someone who charges less. But you get what you pay for. We prefer to do it right and not cut corners.
What is a Spool Pool & Why You May Want One
With a spool pool, you can have the best of both worlds no matter the size of your backyard. The word spool stands for Spa+Pool in one. You can run both hot and cold! Crank up the heat and turn on the jets for the soothing tranquility of a true spa experience or, turn the dial down for more tranquil and cooler waters to allow you to swim or do water aerobics for some exercise. It's a "two birds with one stone" type of pool.
What is a spool pool?
Spool Pools
These may be on the small side of the pool spectrum, but spool pools are feature-rich because they combine the best of several worlds. A fusion of “spa” and “pool” a “spool” generally adds up to no more than 16’ long and 8’ wide. Although smaller than the average pool, they’re larger than the average spa.
What Makes Spools Special
Space-saving.
Regardless of your yard’s size, you may not wish the pool to take up too much real estate. If you want to set up a badminton net or expand your deck to include a tanning surface, or have been eyeing all the amazing outdoor kitchen configurations available, you may wish to rein in your pool area allocation.
Affordability.
Do you want to enjoy the best of both worlds but can’t afford both a pool and a spa? A spool brings those two diverse elements together in one unique setting.
Temperature Control.
With a spool you can literally run both hot and cold! Crank up the heat and turn on the jets for the soothing tranquility of a true spa experience. Or, turn the dial down for more tranquil and cooler waters to allow you to swim or do water aerobics for some exercise.
Powerful Jets.
If you want to get the most distance in, you can set your spool to enable you to literally swim against the current; essentially swimming in place as you stroke and kick against the jets. A major maximization of this smaller footprint!
Versatility.
It is totally worth getting a cost estimate on adding a detachable partition. Just say you want to get some laps in and your partner wants to bubble away the day, the partition acts as a barrier so your spool can not only run at two different temperatures simultaneously, it will be half pool, half spa…everyone’s happy!
Maintenance.
Because it’s smaller in scope than its swimming pool counterparts, the time and money you need to spend on caring for this structure is less. Besides all its other features, this affordability makes a spool even more attractive.
Climate Control.
Your pool season is dictated by the area in which you live. So, every year you need to say goodbye to your pool for several months. With a spool, you can throw it into “spa mode” and heat that water up for a decadent soak in the cooler months.
Décor.
Just because a spool is not your run of the mill, traditional pool solution doesn’t mean it can’t be treated to the same scope of amenities.
- Surround it in pavers or steppingstones embedded in the grass.
- Frame it in foliage or decorative ceramic planters.
- Erect a changing cabana and plug in a towel heater.
- Install a little frig to keep that champagne chilled.
- Position an all-weather chest that can house suits and flip flops and sunscreen.
- Place a cantilever umbrella to make a bold statement. (Plus, you can tilt it against the sun as needed and wheel it away in inclement weather.)
- Finish the picture with a few Adirondack chairs and a side table to establish your respite away from the world.

Newbie’s Guide to Inground Pool Shapes
New to pools? You’re in the right spot. Today’s topic is Pool Shapes. The simple way to look at it is there are two ways to go when it comes to pool shapes. You either do Geometric (pools with 45-degree angles) or Freeform (which is pools with curves). After knowing that, today’s post gets a little granular on standard pool shapes, custom pool shapes, and what works best for certain spaces and budgets. This way you will have an idea of what you want when the time comes to hire a pool contractor.
POOL SHAPES
Rectangle
This is by far the most common shape and fits efficiently and attractively in most yards. Many other pool shapes are simply variations of the rectangular shape. Rectangle pools present a modern style of simplicity, elegance, and clean lines.
Pros: Great savings on material costs compared to any free form pool, fewer grout lines, and cuts, and can fit on most spaces. Rectangle pools are the perfect shape for those modern homes looking for a clean look and a simple design. Because of their “straight lines,” a rectangular pool provides ample space for children to play and to swim laps.
Cons: Are mainly used for modern properties due to having straight edges.
Roman End & Double Roman End
Roman-shaped pools are large rectangular pools with domes that emerge outward on both sides. One of the domes usually has stairs to enter the pool. This shape is excellent for sunbathing since the stairs provide a rather large platform to relax on while in the water.
Pros: Presents a regal design and can accommodate more people at a time. The domes are usually used as baja step saving up swim space.
Cons: Corners require a lot more attention to detail and materials to move the water around, which can lead to additional costs. Not a great choice for small backyards.
Figure 8
Figure 8 shaped pools taper a bit from the middle and are rounded on both ends. One of the best things about figure 8 shaped swimming pools is that you can feel the free flow of water. On sharp edges of a rectangular pools, the water tends to refract strongly after hitting the walls. The curves of this pool shape help the water to circulate instead of being refracted backward.
Pros: Feel the free flow of water, can work with most spaces.
Cons: A figure 8 shape pool requires more detail than a straight line pool, which can lead to additional material cost and labor.
Kidney Bean
This is like an oval pool, but with a slight bend; the crook creates a nice space for landscaping, a patio, or a hot tub/spa. Kidney-shaped pools are a classic custom free-form pool, shaped like a kidney bean, round on both sides and curved inwards on one edge. The kidney pool shape is excellent for pools with added water features such as spas, waterfalls, and grottos.
Pros: Works for any kind of space, more curves that allow other components to blend in such as landscapes, decorations, water features, rocks, etc.
Cons: Kidney shape pools are usually no bigger than 90 feet in perimeter, a very large kidney can look a little odd. Custom coping pieces will have to be installed or straight pieces need to be cut, then more grout lines will show. A kidney shape pool requires more detail than a straight-line pool, which can lead to additional material cost and/or labor.
L-Shaped
This is a rectangular pool with a second, shorter length. The shorter length is often the shallow play area or Baja step, whereas the longer length is ideal for lap swimming. L-shaped pools are as impressive as the name. The vertical shank of the L is generally shorter and of smaller width, while the other part of the oasis is longer and has more breadth. This form of a pool is useful for courtyards with unique needs, most people that like L shape pools use the vertical shank of the L to install a baja-step to not take away much swim space.
Pros: Clean look and lines, baja-step, and pool steps won’t take up swim space. Plus, they work wonders when dealing with small backyards.
Cons: Are mainly used for modern properties due to having straight edges.
Freeform
This is not really a shape but instead, a style resembling a natural body of water with lots of curves. Freeform pool shapes are the most space-friendly and popular pool shape. You can customize your pool’s shape in any way that works best for your yard and your budget. Free-form pools generally have more curves than other pool shapes, allowing you to build a truly unique pool.
Pros: Freeform shapes work for any kind of space and the curvest allow for other components to blend in such as landscapes, grottos, decorations, water features, rocks, etc.
Cons: When not designed right, it can eat up too much swim space, coping pieces will have to be cut and more grout lines will show. This type of pool requires more detail than a straight line pool, which can lead to additional material cost and/or labor.
And so many more…….
Overall, sky is the limit on shapes you can choose from for an in-ground concrete pool. In fact, if you’re building a concrete pool, you can have it shaped however you like.
